Ask HN: Google won't fix my address in maps- I'm lost

10 points by rexfuzzle 2 years ago

First off, this is after trying to edit it in google maps, then when that didn't work, reaching out on maps communities who also couldn't help.

The crux of the issue is that I don't have a street number, but I do have a house name and number. My address is something like: 2 My House Name My Street Name Postal Code

That is what it says on the Royal Mail's address checker, the title deed and every other map, except google. The edit I submitted via google maps still says pending a couple of months later and the communities forum doesn't accept that I don't have a street number and so can't/won't help.

The effects of this is that nobody can find my house on google maps which I'm learning that quite a few delivery services use.

Anybody got any hints or suggestions?

I posted this in a similar thread. It seems like you’re in the UK which might change things a bit but it may help you:

I had a similar problem trying to get my address added to Google Maps and other platforms! I live in the US, and the post office changed my address (new number and street name) when a new road was cut in near my house. It was incredibly frustrating! I tried on and off for weeks submitting reports, which were all closed or ignored. I figured out that if you create a business, Google will let you put in the address of the business and drop a pin on the map where the business is. They do not verify if the street address was previously in their database. So I created a fake business on Google and gave it my home address, and dropped a pin on my house. It showed up on the map within hours. Kind of hacky, but problem solved. Good luck!

Wow, that is brilliant- will give it a try- thank you. Did you close the business once the address had been added?

I marked it as permanently closed after I got it to show on the map. The business still shows but has a red "permanently closed" banner on it but the address is still marked and correct in google maps

I am a Google Local Guide level 6, and I was able to modify locations in the past for places I lived at, my friend's house and places I've visited, Google usually approved those within a couple of days.

I suggest you find a Local Guide with a high level that can make those modifications for you, Google is likely to accept theirs.

I'm already a level 6 local guide and my edits weren't accepted :(

      That's unfortunate.

I have upvoted your post in hope for someone from Google who can and is willing to help contacts you.

It is not a gated community and the address exists in the public databases

Hey, all caps is a bad manner on a forum, unless you’re trying to express a screaming tone for some short sentence, which may be only occasionally adequate.

Either unstick your capslock or stop commenting, please.
