For long and complex documentation with a lot of tables, standard Markdown just isn't good enough. ReStructured Text was very capable and we used it a lot for PDF manuals and specs. It seems like not many people know about it. I'm looking forward to trying out Asciidoc and comparing that.

I prefer Asciidoc. It's just as capable, but I feel that the syntax is more natural and consistent. IMO, it's also more readable in most aspects, though less readable in certain aspects (although they tend to seem like logical trade offs). For example, tables are less "readable", but are easier to format and manage.

It certainly takes longer to memorize all of the syntax and its features compared to markdown, but I found it a lot easier to do so than reStructuredText.

Asciidoctor, now this brings back the memories

I did my entire bachelor AND master in Swiss law with Asciidoctor. The total amount of notes I've taken was like 2 or 3 times LOTR. It worked great!
