What a great band, there's a lot we'll never know about them, but I think it's crazy that I at least have a definitive answer about Mizutani being alive up until 2019, because pretty much everything you'd read said that he was so reclusive no one knew. I'm happy that he lived that long and really sad that he didn't get to live long enough for a revival.

I won't even pretend to understand their music, and the bootlegs are of varying quality, but there are some definite gems. In addition to the songs mentioned in the article, this is a great one especially for people that aren't that into noise music:

Here are a couple of their better bootleg albums:

Can remember geeking out with a record store clerk in the mid 00s about all sorts of ear splitting trash, and when he went to mention LRD there was this awkward moment when it became clear that neither of us had ever actually uttered the band's name out loud before, and didn't really know how to say it. Even though their star has been rising for some time now, it's still a bit surreal seeing a NYT article about them—with a helpful pronunciation to boot.

A lot of rock fans never heard of the psychedelic japanese or german scene, particularly, and they get great pleasure when they do. Apart from the gigantic Rallizes, I would recommend the following bands for starters: Can[0], Faust[1], The Boredoms[2], Acid Mothers Temple[3], OOIOO[4], Amon Duul II[5]. They are all very creative and have a lot of different styles to their different albums/works etc.

I had to immediately pre-order all 3 of the vinyl reissues. It's really sad to hear that Mizutani was interested in a reunion just months before he died, but to even learn that much is pretty interesting.

Crazy the exposure this group is getting. HN? Noise record collecting me in high school would be delighted to know the world of coders was as eclectic and culturally tuned in as he had hoped.
