Tell HN: ChatGPT Writes an Electrician’s Manual

9 points by maxutility a year ago

As an exercise in curiosity, I decided to see whether ChatGPT would write reasonably convincing instructions for rewiring your home. In return, ChatGPT wrote a plausible (to a layman) fourteen hundred word guide in six short chapters. (Word of warning: don’t use this or ChatGPT as a guide for performing any potentially dangerous or destructive activity)

Table of contents: Chapter 1: Preparation Chapter 2: Removing the Faulty Knob and Tube Wiring Chapter 3: Installing New Wiring Chapter 4: Labeling and Documenting the New Wiring Installation Chapter 5: Disposal of the Old Knob and Tube Wiring Chapter 6: Inspection and Testing

Then, just for kicks, I followed up by asking ChatGPT to write and then explain a hypothetical critical Amazon user review.

I’ll paste the entire prompt and response thread in a comment.

My initial takeaways: 1. The internet has long had a problem with poorly written SEO spam how-to guides, and large language models are going to make the problem exponentially worse. 2. People and property may be seriously harmed and people may even die by following faulty instructions generated by large language models. (In this case I have no idea of whether the instructions I received were good or dangerously misguided/incomplete)

That electrician's manual is great! Found it works for anything:

Acorn Repair Manual

1. Inspect the Acorn.

Inspect the Acorn for any visible damage or signs of wear and tear. Check the shell, the interior, and the stem for any cracks or discoloration.

2. Clean the Acorn.

Using a damp cloth, carefully clean the Acorn. Be sure to use a mild detergent to help remove dirt and debris.

3. Inspect the Stem.

Inspect the stem for any signs of damage. Look for cracks, dents, or other signs of damage.

4. Repair the Stem.

If there is any damage to the stem, use a file or sandpaper to carefully smooth the edges. If necessary, use a drill to widen any cracks.

5. Reattach the Shell.

Using a strong adhesive, carefully reattach the shell to the stem. Allow the adhesive to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

6. Finish the Acorn.

Once the adhesive has dried, use a clear sealant to finish the Acorn. This will help protect it from the elements and ensure it lasts longer.

7. Enjoy the Acorn.

Once the repair is complete, enjoy your newly repaired Acorn!

Chapters three through five (second of three posts outlining the whole ChatGPT session). Refer to the prior warning.

Chapter 3: Installing New Wiring 1. Consult the building's electrical plan or speak with the property owner or manager to determine the appropriate type and size of wire to use for the new installation. Make sure to use wire that is rated for the voltage and amperage of the circuit you will be working on. 2. Measure and cut the new wire to the appropriate length. Leave some extra length at both ends to allow for connections to be made later. 3. Strip the insulation from the ends of the new wire, using a wire stripper or knife. Be careful not to damage the wire itself during this process. 4. Connect the new wire to the existing circuit. If the new wire is being installed in a parallel circuit, simply connect the new wire to the same points where the old wire was connected. If the new wire is being installed in a series circuit, it will need to be connected to the circuit at both ends. 5. Secure the new wire in place using electrical tape or other appropriate materials. Be sure to leave enough slack in the wire to allow for movement and expansion, but not so much that it becomes a tripping hazard. 6. Test the new circuit to ensure that it is functioning properly. Use a voltage tester to confirm that power is flowing through the new wire and that all connections are secure. By following these steps, electricians can safely and effectively install new wiring to replace faulty knob and tube wiring in a building. In the next chapter, we will discuss the importance of properly labeling and documenting the new wiring installation. —— Prompt: Chapter four of six - labeling and documentation. —— Chapter 4: Labeling and Documentation 1.
