Ask HN: Advice for older dude looking to find startup

6 points by a_simm a year ago

Hi,

I'm 55 and am finished with a startup I co-founded because the hard work is done, and we're not headed for geometric growth.

I don't have a compelling new idea; have ample tech skills, but want to focus on operations, communication and marketing; am financially independent but won't invest money.

I've no network in the startup area and been a successful university teacher and quantitative researcher.

Ideally, I would find a small team with a vision and a reasonable chance of success. More importantly, they should be committed, competent and non-jerks,

I know lot's of people have ideas; what would you do in my place in terms of finding those with the listed qualities who'd be interested in me?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: Thanks for every reply, I'll start reaching out to individuals soon; if you mentioned mentoring or accelerators, some specific examples would be helpful to me.

Hey, I’m founding a startup that’s in stealth and going to be for the next year.

I’m always looking for folks who want to be involved. Folks who come from a diverse background and can challenge my beliefs, actions, and ideas.

If you’re interested in hearing a pitch, it’ll require an NDA, you can hit me up at ct@christophertimberlake.com

An NDA? That's how I can tell you're a new founder. No one cares about ideas, it's all about execution. For example, I'll give you an idea, an app to book a taxi with drivers also being other people who get paid for your ride. Can you execute it?

    It's all about execution.

Bold of you to assume I'm going to spend any time listening to a random pitch let alone sign an NDA.

Ideas are totally free and useless. Unless you've truly cornered the market and have backing to capture it - in which case you wouldn't be posting offers to pitch people on a free website.

I'd join an accelerator as a mentor. I know at least one case where someone did that and then eventually joined the team as a co-founder.

So look for an accelerator in your area (either geographic or domain) and see if you can volunteer for the next cohort.

Please take a look at ulog.ai and ping me your email for a free subscription. I'm very open to finding collaborators for marketing/comms right now, I much prefer the tech work. Happy to chat after you've taken a look!
