A lot of high comment count posts on the front page thanks to the various Apple announcement discussions. If it's sluggish, log out or view it in a different-than-normal browser or privacy mode. You'll get the cached version which will be much faster, fine for reading but obviously you can't post.
This happens whenever there are very active discussions on the front page (look for comment counts over 200, that's when it starts getting sluggish).

The Apple haters need to know what to be angry about and agree on talking points. HN is as good a place as any to do that.
I was unable to log in for quite some time, but finally got in. Commenting is still rather sluggish.
And I had some trouble with Google Chat not long ago, which makes me wonder if this [0] could be related.
