The album Getz/Gilberto is named as such because it's a collaboration between Stan Getz and João Gilberto. Astrud was João's wife at the time, and her presence on the album is really the consequence of happenstance and luck.

It seems cruel that she would be paid so little for her contributions (even including any benefits she accrued from being married to João). But at the same time...

...surely she benefitted massively from the exposure? I doubt she would have had nearly as successful a solo career had she not performed on Getz/Gilberto. It's certainly how I discovered her, which led me to her other music. I wouldn't expect her to thank Getz or the producer, but it does seem to have worked out okay for her career.

Anyway, here's my favorite Astrud Gilberto song: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-HxJ0J5QnCk

"You got blatantly screwed, but salvaged a little bit of a career despite that...so that should be good enough for you" is a classic way to excuse the behavior of people like Getz.

Session musicians are typically paid per session. Do you have an idea for a better system?

The title from the article, which IMHO didn't convey the full message, is -

‘He made sure that she got nothing’: The sad story of Astrud Gilberto, the face of bossa nova
