The article states that the swapped display ipads still allowed the pencil to work, they just had non-straight lines... This seems like the article stating it's a "lockdown" is simply not true. Seems like there's some per-display calibration that is not getting transfered between displays.
If they wanted to prevent you from using the Pencil, it seems like you wouldn't be able to use it at all. Not just use it poorly.
Is this is similar to the situation with vehicles that have to have the parts coded to the ECU otherwise they refuse to work?
I know that it's trendy to hate on Apple, and I hate that Apple is doing this, but why has no one cared that for over a decade now my Honda has parts that even an independent garage cannot replace due to coding of parts?
also note that T2 chips are required for developer enrollment, so if you were hoping to enroll as a dev on your 2017 MBP, youre shit out of luck, go buy a new macbook, for "security" reasons.
their automated enrollment process and developer support are horrendous too imo.
Also non-Apple branded displays don't work in standards-compliant RGB mode but rather a less optimal YPbPr mode. This can be overridden by generating a custom EDID file: google Mac EDID ruby.
I'm actually glad my Volvo uses coded parts. Makes the airbags less valuable so there's a smaller chance they get stolen. (last time I was at another car dealership there were dozens of cars lined up for repair with the airbags ripped out so it's a real problem)
Preventing 'evil maid' attacks by switching components seems a bit far fetched for most people's threat model but you can't say you are secure with a straight face and just let people switch some ic's to break your security.
That non-official replacement screen with fingerprint reader can in theory contain a backdoor to reproduce your fingerprint for another party.

They could, but this sneaky approach gives them plausible deniability and lets them spread more FUD to discourage third-party repair by casting doubt.
