> The Chinese Embassy in Berlin. Arrests this week in Germany and Britain suggest not so much that Beijing has ramped up espionage work but that European countries have stepped up their response.

The headline plants one idea (i.e., China is adding more and more spies), but then immediately the lede paragraphs offers an entirely different take (i.e., The West is outing spies with increased fervor).

I fully accept the responsibly for this statement (i.e., here come the down votes) but someone needs to say it: Why is the NYT such a "journalistic" shit-show? That is, given the lede, the headline is deceptive. It's fake news.

The saddest of all? It won't be questioned. Such intentional sloppiness is accepted and normalized. It's considered journalism (as if propaganda suddenly qualifies as such)? Yet how many will read the headline, keep scrolling, never see the lede, and be left with the idea that is for all intents and purposes a lie?

The hopes of a clean and unbiased discussion is already off the rails. WTF.

Perhaps they got the idea that once the West finishes off Russia, they are next on the list.

West is not destroying Russia. Russia is destroying itself by larping as an insane imperium.

They could have been a strong Europe's partner with all their natural resources. Instead Russia is behaving like a toddler with a gun. Europe tried really hard to welcome them to civilized society. Alas.

It is actually the other way around.

If EU did not mindlessly toady along Washington’s imperial goals, it would have a reliable low cost commodity and energy supplier and European economy would be competitive and not be where it is today.

EU needs an independent foreign policy that maximises its own strategic interests. But the problem is EU is not a homogenous country. So it is unlikely to happen.

Nonsense. Case in point: Nordstream 2. Something that USA heavily opposed and EU pushed through anyway. But Putin doesn't want to be a partner, he wants to be a tzar at the cost of anything.

USA has its own imperial goals but it's pure whataboutism and has nothing to do with reason why Russia is degrading back to 19th century today.

Russia is the cheapest energy source for Germany. And Germany did nothing when the US blew up Nordstream 2.

Russia is doing fine. It is not a communist state run by godless Bolshevik jews. It is commerce friendly, has better infrastructure than many EU countries, per capita income has improved quite a bit, growing economy even under heavy sanctions, first rate military and space technology, etc etc.
