Tell HN: Stripe Link closed my account without explanation

6 points by nikolay 1 year ago

After I contacted their support, they just wrote:

Upon careful review, we are unable to onboard you at this time. We're sorry for the inconvenience, but your account has been deactivated, and you will no longer be able to use your Link account.

What kind of joke is this?! I'm a Stripe customer and have a multitude of businesses on Stripe. I've been a Link customer since day 1. I have had my identity verified many times with Stripe's identity verification service on third-party sites, and suddenly, they randomly or erroneously decide to close my Link account, linked to a bunch of services, without explanation, without a chance to speak to a human, without an opportunity to escalate or review!

Eventually, all tech companies become big, fat, lazy, and inhumane! Remember when people said PayPal was evil? Well, PayPal has real people on the phone, and, actually, I've never had an issue they haven't resolved in a humane and friendly manner. Stripe, on the other hand, seems much worse!

Unfortunately, this is far to common with Stripe. Stripe shut down my previous SaaS without warning or explanation, and later turned it back on after admitting they accidentally shut it down. It was almost a death sentence for my business.

I built OpenPay (getopenpay.com) so you can flexibly move between payment processors without losing a cent of revenue. Happy to get you set up for free, and help you migrate from Stripe. Feel free to reach out to me at lance [at] getopenpay.com

Sounds like they don't want to do business with you because they think you are Russian.

Maybe. But I'm not Russian. I know a Mexican called Ivan.

Anyway, there's no business as literally Link is just tokenized credit card storage - it serves them, not me. I use 1Password with Privacy.com, so Link serves them and does nothing for me. But I feel offended by their hostile and unjust action!

What are you basing that off of?

My username is "nikolay" - a popular Russian name, although most Russians spell it as "Nikolai".

And? They're just as useless and won't tell you anything.
