Once I got to 37% total countries identified (seen?), it basically stopped showing me new countries. I went through five or so rounds without seeing anything that I hadn’t seen before. Which was gratifying, since I was getting 20/20 every time, but you might tweak it a little to add in new countries more frequently.

Nicely made! I thought I'm good with flags, and then there come a question of jordan, palestine and two more similar flags.

I made a similar but uglier little party game https://geo-dude.com for my kids. Supports up to 4 players

already played it with my kids. its fun !. need to improve the country randomization. south america keep pointing into peru.

Thanks for the feedback, will look into it!

If you read this message, can you provide more context please? Are you choosing the "Name the country" mode with question from "Same continent". It might be that south america has only 13 countries in my database, so it appears to be repeated.

I just turned the repo public for your reference.

      Country list at https://github.com/kmcheung12/geo-dude/blob/main/server/coun...

Picking a question from a continent is shuffle and then pick question per round, so "pick without replacement" https://github.com/kmcheung12/geo-dude/blob/main/server/inde...

Disclaimer, used a lot of AI so I didn't read every line of code

This looks really good, but sometimes it seemed like there was no country to click on for the tiny islands?

For St Lucia, for instance, the closest visible country was (I think) Puerto Rico. I clicked on it, and then it showed me where St Lucia was in the middle of the black ocean. As far as I could tell, even zooming in, there was morning to click on there.

Same thing happened with Micronesia. There are very few islands in the Pacific visible.

stream of thoughts:

"all countries" doesn't really show all countries. It seems all countries might be in the pool, but there is no weighted randomness, so you end up getting the same flags, and only a few new ones.

Forcing all flags to be in the same aspect ratio really makes the flags look strange, or rather, not how they really are. This also makes things like Monaco/Indonesia identification more difficult, and flags with horizontal stripes to look strange (Sudan, Cuba, etc).

Some flags seem to look odd or broken? Such as Ecuador which looks like a kid drew it and is pretty broken. Some flags have a weird border around them too, as if they haven't been placed or rendered correctly.

I'm not sure if having a list of flags just below the quiz helps the integrity of it. I'm also not sure of all the AI generated stuff. Are people really mixing up Morroco and Veitnam? Getting to that page again is difficult and unclear, you need to click the flag from the country page, or get it wrong in a quiz. I feel it's a little confusing to have separate pages describing the country and flag. Especially considering its a website about flags.

Is there a mode to run through all the countries, instead of just 20?

A while ago I practiced every day on an android app, and the pleasure I got when I finally got 196/196 was extremely satisfying.

I'd also like to recommend that flags of different aspect ratios be shown correctly.

Sinister mode: Romania versus Chad, Monaco versus Indonesia, Senegal versus Mali, Egypt/Syria/Iraq/Yemen, etc.

Huh, it has grouping for the multiple choice, so for a red and white flag (2 horizontal stripes) with some stars the options are Monaco, Indonesia, Singapore, Poland. All of which are horizontally striped and have those 2 colors.

Same with the Nordic flags, which have similar geometry but different colors.

Nicely curated.

Guessing the flags is actually really hard

This is a lot of fun. My 'biggest' gripe is that in the shapes quiz Tuvalu and the Seychelles are so tiny that no image displayed for me that I could see.

It’s very obvious that the layout is ai, refine it a bit.

This is so cool. We used to play a paper version of this game back home and this really brings back feelings.

Btw, really smooth. It works really well!

Nice website! Could you tell use a bit more about this project? What prompted you to make it? I've been looking for a good ad-free, account-free minimal flag learning website and this looks like a good fit.

It would be nice if the proportions of the flags were respected. For example Vatican and Switzerland have a 1:1 ratio (square).

Nepal with it's extraordinary format seems to be represented ok.

ryanchants 1 day ago

This is cool, but is testing recognition, not recall. It needs an extra challenging mode where you have to provide the country, not multiple choice.

  • Triesault 1 day ago

There is an option on the top view plane where you can switch from "Multiple choice" to "Type the answer".

hah, knew I should have dug around more

Cool app. I enjoy the variety of game options, not just guessing the flag.

The app is designed very well and it is very addictive.

The flag of Paraguy says "Paraguy" on it, you might want to blur that.

It should show the meaning of the colors and symbols of the flag after the user answers.

Probably a useful bookmark if you’re going on The Amazing Race. They always throw in a flag quiz toward the end.
